
Australatya hawkei (Hawke's Fan Shrimp)
Species Account
A large amphidromous species endemic to northeast Australia from Sarina in mid-east Queensland to the Iron Range on eastern Cape York Peninsula, northeast Queensland. A filter-feeding species preferring flowing water. Adults are typically found in upper catchment fresh waters from above 100 m to over 1000 m elevation. Protandrous, males change to females at 8 mm carapace length. Rostrum short, dorsal margin unarmed, ventral margin with 5–8 teeth; antennal spine fused with lower orbital margin of carapace; first and second chelae lacking palm region, carpus deeply excavated. Body typically black, grey, brown or dark green with white or yellow dorsal stripe and several lateral stripes. Carapace length to 16 mm. — John W. Short, 2026
