
Australatya striolata (Southeast Australian Fan Shrimp)
Species Account
A large amphidromous species endemic to southeast Australia from the Sunshine Coast, southeast Queensland to the Genoa River, northeast Victoria. A filter-feeding species preferring flowing fresh water from lower to upper catchments and 200 m elevation. Protandrous, males change to females at 5 mm carapace length. Rostrum short, dorsal margin unarmed, ventral margin with 4–8 teeth; antennal spine fused with lower orbital margin of carapace; first and second chelae lacking palm region, carpus deeply excavated. Body typically black, grey, brown or dark green with white or yellow dorsal stripe and several lateral stripes. Carapace length to 13 mm. Sold in the aquarium industry as the Riffle Shrimp.
