
Caridina gracilirostris (Red Nose Shrimp)
Species Account
A medium-sized euryhaline species with a wide distribution in the Indo-West Pacific region including India, Indonesia, the Philippines, New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and northeast Queensland, Australia. Adults in lowland fresh waters near the limit of tidal influence and brackish water. Rostrum very long, curved upwards, lower margin with 21–35 closely spaced teeth, upper margin with 5–9 well-spaced teeth in proximal half and 1–2 subapical teeth; antennal spine distinct from lower orbital margin of carapace; preanal carina with well-developed spine. Body translucent, usually with an orange or reddish rostrum and a few narrow transverse bands on the abdominal tergites, particularly the third tergite. Eggs small (0.5 mm) and numerous. Body length to 35 mm. Sold in the aquarium trade as the Red Nose Shrimp, Pinocchio Shrimp or Rhinoceros Shrimp. — John W. Short, 2026
