Species Account
A wide-ranging, predominantly insular, euryhaline species with a broad distribution in the Indo-West Pacific from east Africa to Japan and Polynesia. Euryhaline, adults predominantly in fresh water, larval development requiring marine influence. Lower to upper courses of rivers to 300 m elevation. Rostrum short, not extending beyond second segment of antennular peduncle; upper margin unarmed, lower margin with 1-6 teeth; carapace with inferior orbital angle fused with antennal spine. Body translucent with closely spaced dark specks giving a dark brown appearance except for a conspicuous, cream-coloured dorsal stripe along the length of the body. Eggs small (about 0.4 mm) and numerous. Length to 36 mm. Sold in the aquarium trade as the Australian Amano Shrimp. — John W. Short, 2026
