
Caridina zebra (Australian Zebra Shrimp)
Species Account
A small, upland rainforest species endemic to the Wet Tropics of northeast Queensland. Although presently recorded from the Herbert River to the Barron River, only the upper Tully and Herbert River catchment records have so far been confirmed by molecular data. Rostrum very short, not reaching tip of second segment of antennular peduncle, usually unarmed; carapace with inferior orbital angle fused with antennal spine; eggs large (to 1.1 mm in length) and few in number. Body with conspicuous black and white transverse bands (upper Tully and Herbert River catchments only). Length to 20 mm. A striking aquarium subject but requires soft acidic water at 18–20 degrees C.🔗View original description by Short (1993). — John W. Short, 2026
