Cherax (Yabbies, Gilgies, Koonacs, Marron, Redclaw)

Introduction

The genus Cherax is endemic to the Australian continental plate including Australia and southern New Guinea. In Australia, they are commonly known as Yabbies, Gilgies, Koonacs, Marron or Redclaw. A number of beautifully coloured species have recently been discovered in southern New Guinea and popularised in the aquarium industry.  —  John W. Short, 2026

Diagnosis

Pincers of first chelipeds closing obliquely or horizontally, lateral margin of palm and fixed finger smooth, lacking spines; branchiocardiac grooves merging with cervical groove on dorsum of carapace; telson membranous on posterior half.  —  John W. Short, 2026
