Cherax quadricarinatus (Redclaw)

Species Account

A large, fully aquatic species with a wide distribution in northern Australia from the Northern Territory to eastern Cape York Peninsula, Queensland. A highly similar species occurs in southern Papua New Guinea. Bluish-green to almost black with a purple-flecked abdomen. The common name is derived from the conspicuous bright red soft patch on the outer propodus of both chelae in mature males. Length to 200 mm. Widely cultivated in warmer areas throughout the world.
