Euastacus (Spiny Mountain Crayfishes)

Introduction

Spiny mountain crayfishes of the genus Euastacus are endemic to eastern Australia and typically inhabit upland rainforest streams along the Great Dividing Range as far north as the Thornton Peak in north Queensland. In the temperate southeast of the continent a number of species also occur in lowland areas. Over 50 species are presently recognised.  —  John W. Short, 2026

Diagnosis

Pincers of first chelipeds closing obliquely or horizontally, lateral margin of palm and fixed finger spinose; branchiocardiac grooves merged with cervical groove on dorsum of carapace; posterior telson membranous.  —  John W. Short, 2026
