Family Hippolytidae (Hump-backed Shrimps)

Introduction

The Hippolytidae is a cosmopolitan shrimp family comprising 16 genera and over 100 species (extant taxa). Hippolytids are found almost exclusively in marine environments and are commonly associated with seagrass beds or seaweed. A number of species also inhabit coral reefs where they are either free living or symbiotic on other invertebrates.  —  John W. Short, 2026

Diagnosis

First two pairs of legs developed as chelipeds, first chelipeds more robust than second chelipeds, subequal, not swollen; carpus of second cheliped subdivided; chelipeds without dense brushes of long setae; rostrum immovable; abdomen often humped in appearance.  —  John W. Short, 2026
