A large euryhaline species closely related to the Asian Giant River Prawn, M. rosenbergii, but showing a predominantly insular distribution in the West Pacific eastward of Huxley's Line, viz. eastern Indonesia, Taiwan, the Philippines (including Palawan), Palau, New Guinea and Australia.
