Introduction
The Parastacidae is a southern hemisphere family of freshwater crayfishes comprising 15 genera and over 220 species (extant taxa). The majority of species and genera are found in the Australia–southern New Guinea region. The family also occurs in New Zealand, South America and Madagascar. — John W. Short, 2026
