Species Account

A small, gregarious, semi-terrestrial, endemic Australian species restricted to coastal areas in southeast Queensland. Typically found in seasonally inundated wetlands, particularly paperbark swamps. Tolerant of a wide variety of soil types from clay to humic sand.  Lives in deep communal burrows during the drier winter-spring period but may be found in shallow water amongst leaf litter in summer. Easily confused with juvenile Cherax but the chelae of the first chelipeds open and close vertically rather than horizontally or obliquely. — John W. Short, 2026
